Abstract

This chapter presents a detailed study on the geospatial mapping of river health, focusing on the watersheds of Sumbawa Island, Indonesia. The research highlights the critical role of river ecosystems in supporting community livelihoods and economic development, while also addressing the threats posed by declining water quality due to human activities and environmental changes. The methodology employs the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) to leverage geospatial data, including land use, soil properties, and meteorological information, to identify optimal monitoring stations. This approach ensures a more accurate assessment of river health compared to traditional multivariate techniques. The study also integrates Inverse Distance Weighted (IDW) interpolation and multivariate statistical analyses to map river health indices and identify pollution sources. Seasonal variations and land use impacts on water quality are thoroughly examined, providing insights into the dynamics of river health in tropical regions. The findings underscore the importance of sustainable water resource management and conservation efforts to maintain the long-term viability of river ecosystems.
