The concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere will probably double at a timescale of a few human generations. This increase may induce climatic changes that will exceed the adaptive capacity of nature, and indeed of the human society. The intensification of the otherwise beneficial natural greenhouse effect has become a cause of concern, since it may lead to temperature increases of the order of a few degrees centigrade.
