Abstract

In order to increase functionality and process performance, today’s and future products need a high degree of tailoring to customer needs. Key drivers are Industry 4.0 and individualized end-customer production capabilities up to lot size one where each product can be easily produced in small amounts and customized. This has to be accomplished under the guardrails of decreasing time-to-market and increasing quality-to-market. Additionally, within large engineering enterprises, the project engineering know-how and the capacities are distributed all over the globe. To fulfill customer requirements, the product knowledge has to be available everywhere at any time. Standardizing custom projects and high-level project configuration guidance via project profile matching are a promising step towards global engineering solutions. This paper will show and describe a first solution and simple working prototypes of a Global Communication Infrastructure (GCI) that were developed and validated based on interviews with six representatives from different industries. Here, the current state of the art regarding knowledge sharing in the different industries as well as the envisioned advantages and potential of the GCI were addressed.
