Abstract
Abstract: Typically, a refractory lining has two components, dense and porous. Dense refractory protects against all mechanical actions, chemical attack, thermal load, in contradiction the porous part takes care of insulation purposes, restricts heat loss and enhances thermal efficiency. Hence, in practice two different types of refractories, dense and insulating, are used. In the present work an attempt has been made to get these two contradictory features in a single refractory brick, termed as gradient refractory. This gradient refractory will have a dense part on one side as well as an insulating porous part on the other side.
