BMW has developed the "Heart of Joy" central computer for the models of the "Neue Klasse". It combines powertrain and driving dynamics functions for the first time.

BMW has developed a high-performance test vehicle called "BMW Vision Driving Experience" that acts as a rolling test bench for a newly developed powertrain and driving dynamics control system. "Heart of Joy" was developed specifically for the upcoming battery-electric "Neue Klasse". For the first time, the control unit combines powertrain and driving dynamics functions, i.e. for driving, braking, charging, recuperation and steering subfunctions. According to BMW, the information can be processed ten times faster than in previous systems. Together with the central processing unit and the "BMW Dynamic Performance Control" software, this should enable a direct response from all connected actuators with only minimal delays.

This can reduce the number of control interventions required, while increasing traction, for example, in corners. After all, the vision vehicle develops up to 18,000 Nm of maximum torque. In addition, the new system is designed to increase efficiency by up to 25 %, for example, by optimizing recuperation so that the classic brakes are only needed in emergency situations. In the electronic architecture of the “Neue Klasse”, the "Heart of Joy" is one of four central control units. The others are responsible for automated driving, infotainment and basic functions. The vision vehicle is not intended to be related to series production. According to BMW, series production of the SUV model of the "Neue Klasse" will begin this year at the Debrecen plant in Hungary.
