Abstract

The study focuses on the heat transfer visualization of transitional growth of turbulent spots on a wedge in Mach 5.2 hypersonic flow, using fast-response TSP. Hypersonic vehicles experience severe thermal loads, particularly during boundary layer transition from laminar to turbulent flow, which can cause significant damage. Accurate prediction of this transition is crucial for vehicle design. The research investigates the propagation velocity and lateral spreading angle of turbulent spots, which are relevant to the length of the transitional region in the boundary layer. Previous studies have used pointwise measurement techniques, but this study employs TSP for better spatial resolution. The TSP technology allows for quantitative heat flux estimation and provides valuable insights into the spatial information of turbulent spots. The experiments were conducted in a shock tunnel, and the results offer a comprehensive understanding of the heat flux distribution and turbulent spot behavior in hypersonic boundary layers.
