Abstract

The article investigates the applicability of heavy braking (HB) events as a surrogate measure for assessing traffic conflicts, particularly in urban arterials. By analyzing microscopic vehicle trajectories, the study validates HB events against the Deceleration Rate to Avoid Collision (DRAC) measure, demonstrating a strong correlation. This approach offers a more efficient and real-time method for traffic safety analysis, highlighting the potential of HB events to predict and prevent conflicts and crashes. The study is conducted in three Indian cities—Delhi, Surat, and Chennai—and provides insights into the behavioral and safety aspects of different vehicle types under various traffic conditions.
