About this book

This book explores the potential contribution of cultural heritage in the enhancement of the territories, investigating the possibilities but also the criticalities involved in the process. Based on the knowledge process built on the Monasteries of Haghpat, Sanahin, Geghard and moreover, in the Upper Azat Valley in Armenia, the work suggests the development of an integrated design approach with interdisciplinary focus. The conservation of the Architectural Heritage of these sites is a priority for the identity safeguard but also to start virtuous processes able to ensure a sustainable development for places and communities. The objective of this work is the setting of pilot strategies and guidelines for the preservation and promotion of cultural heritage as an engine for a compatible and sustainable tourism development of the area, with tangible impact on social and economic development of the country. The work would benefit local authorities and communities, as well as researchers involved in these topics.

Chapter 1. Cultural Heritage as a Trigger for Sustainable Development in Emerging Countries. The Case of Armenia
Abstract
The complexes of Haghpat, Sanahin, and Geghard, three ancient monasteries in Armenia included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, have been an opportunity to reflect on some key issues concerning the role of tourism in the preservation of cultural heritage and the improvement of living conditions of inhabitants. Starting with reflections on the positive and negative effects of these phenomena on the enhancement of the sites, the work presented in the volume aims to provide guidelines for the sustainable development of local communities, starting from preserving their architectural heritage. How can cultural heritage contribute to the sustainable development of sensitive sites? How can we combine the need for transformation with the conservation of local identities? The following chapters explore these complex issues putting cultural heritage at the center of the reflection.

Chapter 2. The Relationships Between WHS, the Communities, and the Territories
Abstract
Cultural Heritage can play an important and active role in the global challenges such as sustainable development and climate change but it is necessary a change of perspective in its consideration. The enlargement of “heritage meanings”, including widespread heritage, the effects produced by the inclusion of a site in the World Heritage List, the role of tourism in a sustainable development of the territories are only some of the issues at the center of the international discussion. The chapter analyzes the state of the art and the consideration of heritage within the future perspectives, try to understand how it can contribute to common goals.

Chapter 3. A Journey Through Armenian Heritage
Abstract
This chapter describes the whole scenario for developing the proposals for the World Heritage Sites (WHS) Master Plans. The methodological process started with a quick survey to understand the characters and the main problems of the Armenian Architectural Heritage and to insert the work on the monasteries of Haghpat, Sanahin, and Geghard into a more general framework. A second step concerns the tourism analysis of opportunities and threats for an emerging country like Armenia. Some valuable data allow the comprehension of the country’s actual situation to plan possible future scenarios. Finally, the working methodology underlying the proposed Master Plans is outlined, starting from some theoretical considerations and highlighting the two main goals: on the one hand, the proper conservation of the three monasteries, and, on the other, the necessary improvement to the living conditions of the resident population, with a general look to the broader context.

Chapter 4. Monasteries of Haghpat and Sanahin, Monastery of Geghard, and the Upper Azat. The Current Situation of the Two World Heritage Sites
Abstract
This chapter illustrates the current situation of three Monasteries, with particular reference to their state of conservation. The main problems of building degradation are highlighted, starting from a short review of the principal historical events and the current consistency of the complexes. This knowledge process represents a fundamental step to addressing future interventions correctly. The relationship with the surrounding territories is no less critical for the future of the WHS, especially in terms of enhancement. In particular, the villages present many potentialities but different criticalities in all the cases analyzed. Structural measures to improve the living conditions of the resident population are particularly urgent.

Chapter 5. Toward a People-Based Tourist Approach. Suggestions for the Conservation and Enhancement of the World Heritage Sites and Their Territories
Abstract
The inscription of a site on the World Heritage List brings it to the international spotlight, thus opening it to tourism from the “rich” countries. Both governments and populations welcome these processes, due to the economic benefits connected. However, the effects of massive tourism on fragile and sensitive territories can be devastating for Cultural Heritage and for local communities as well. A heritage-based approach is necessary to protect the identity of the places and plan a sustainable development that can bring real benefits to the inhabitants. Only an integrated approach can put the three Monasteries at the center of a virtuous process, based on the assumption that improving the population’s living conditions is essential for preserving the Architectural Heritage and developing the tourism offer. This chapter describes the contents of the proposed Master Plan for the Heritage Sites of Haghpat, Sanahin, and Geghard, while highlighting difficulties and possibilities of developing their contexts.
