Abstract

Herman Hollerith was an American statistician, inventor and entrepreneur. He founded a tabulating machine company in 1896, and this company later merged with another company to become the Computing Tabulating Recording Company. This company was renamed to International Business Machines (IBM) in 1911.

The processing of the 1880 population census was done manually and took several years to complete.

Dr. John Billings did pioneering work on statistics for the 1880 and 1890 population census. He was also a distinguished surgeon. He proposed the idea of mechanization of census data tabulation to Hollerith.
