Abstract

The article presents a detailed investigation into the high-temperature oxidation behavior of conventional and Nb-modified MAR-M246 Ni-based superalloys, crucial for aerospace and automotive turbocharger applications. The study compares the oxidation kinetics, microstructural changes, and oxidation products of both alloys at temperatures ranging from 800°C to 1000°C. Key findings include the formation of protective oxide layers, internal oxidation, and the impact of Nb on oxidation resistance. The results highlight the superior oxidation behavior of the conventional alloy at higher temperatures, making it a better candidate for gasoline engine turbochargers. The Nb-modified alloy, however, shows promise for diesel engine applications. The research also discusses the role of alloying elements like Ta, Nb, and Ti on oxidation behavior, providing valuable insights for further material development.
