BorgWarner is developing a range of electrically driven high-voltage fans for commercial vehicles, addressing the increasing demand for active cooling and ventilation in battery-electric and fuel cell drives. The fans, compliant with ISO 16750 and IPX6/IP6K9K standards, are designed to provide the necessary cooling capacities and torques while minimizing parasitic losses and noise emissions. Aerodynamic optimization of the fan impeller is crucial, ensuring synchronization with the electric motor and achieving high efficiency. The article highlights two approaches: a high-power variant with an axial-flux motor and scalable variants using synchronous motors with external rotors. Additionally, the inverter concept is discussed, emphasizing the importance of functional safety and modular software design. The development process, including CFD simulations and FEA analyses, ensures the fans meet the stringent requirements of modern electrified commercial vehicles.
