Abstract

The chapter delves into the mathematical modeling of communities driven by indirect taxis and short-wavelength external signals, such as temperature or terrain relief. It focuses on the Patlak-Keller-Segel (PKS) systems, which describe the directed movement of species or cells in response to environmental changes. The study introduces homogenization techniques to analyze the stability of quasi-equilibria in inhomogeneous environments, extending the understanding of dynamic transitions and complex spatio-temporal structures. The authors discuss the effects of short-wave signals on the stability of these patterns, highlighting the role of drift and residual drifting velocities. The chapter also presents a linear stability analysis, revealing the conditions for oscillatory and monotonic instabilities, and compares these findings with the case of homogeneous equilibria. The research offers valuable insights into the self-organization processes and the dynamics of active media under the influence of external stimuli.
