Abstract

This study delves into the host suitability of eighteen maize genotypes to the oriental armyworm Mythimna separata, a major polyphagous pest causing significant damage to cereal crops. The research evaluates nutritional indices such as Consumption Index (CI), Approximate Digestibility (AD), Efficiency of Conversion of Ingested food (ECI), Efficiency of Conversion of Digested food (ECD), and Growth Rate (GR) to assess the interaction between the pest and different maize genotypes. The study reveals significant variations in the nutritional indices and developmental performance of M. separata larvae across the genotypes, highlighting the potential of certain genotypes to resist pest infestation. Notably, the maize genotype CML-139 supported optimal larval growth with high conversion efficiency, greater weight gain, and high survival and adult emergence rates, indicating its high suitability as a host. In contrast, CML-208-BBB resulted in poor larval performance, low conversion efficiency, reduced growth rate, and lighter larvae and pupae, suggesting antibiosis and potential resistance. The research also includes a cluster analysis of the maize genotypes based on the nutritional indices, categorizing them into different resistance levels. The findings provide valuable insights into the physiological responses of pests to host plants and can be utilized in breeding programs aimed at developing host plant resistance. The study concludes by emphasizing the importance of understanding insect-plant interactions for sustainable pest management strategies.
