Abstract

The article 'How Do Unions Create Candidates?' delves into the pivotal role of teachers' unions in encouraging and supporting teachers to run for public office. Motivated by concerns over state education policymaking, many teachers, like Jamie, a high school science teacher, decided to run for office in the 2018 midterm elections. The study, based on interviews with 32 teacher candidates, reveals that unions act as 'schools of democracy,' providing training, political awareness, ambition, and support through three developmental stages: political awareness, political ambition, and political support. Teachers' unions engage members in activities that build knowledge, skills, and political identities, fostering a sense of solidarity and political efficacy. The unions also mobilize members, provide material resources, and open doors to political capital, ultimately paving the way for teachers to run for office. This qualitative analysis offers a unique perspective on the long-term processes and mechanisms by which unions support political engagement and candidacy, contributing to a broader understanding of labor's role in democracy and political representation.
