Abstract

This article delves into the intriguing phenomenon of leader time theft and its unintended consequences. It reveals that leaders who engage in time theft often experience feelings of guilt and a perceived loss of moral credits, which in turn motivate them to compensate through proactive helping behavior. The study employs both a scenario-based experiment and a multi-wave field study to validate these findings. It also explores the moderating role of moral reflectiveness, showing that leaders with higher moral reflectiveness are more likely to experience guilt and perceived loss of moral credits, leading to increased proactive helping behavior. The article concludes that understanding these mechanisms can help organizations address time theft more effectively and foster a culture of ethical leadership. Readers will gain insights into the psychological dynamics of leader time theft, the role of moral cleansing in shaping behavior, and practical strategies for promoting ethical leadership in the workplace.
