Abstract

This chapter delves into the framing of political distrust in party manifestos during Japan's 2024 House of Representatives election, a period marked by significant political scandals and a surge in public distrust. The analysis reveals how ruling and opposition parties strategically addressed political funding issues, with the ruling coalition emphasizing transparency and accountability, while opposition parties highlighted systemic corruption and inefficiency. The chapter also explores the unique form of political distrust among young voters, who feel sidelined in favor of the elderly in Japan's aging society. It examines how the Democratic Party for the People (DPP) strategically targeted young voters, focusing on increasing disposable income and downplaying long-term fiscal concerns. The findings underscore the importance of third-party evaluations of party manifestos to address political distrust and ensure long-term sustainability.
