Abstract

The chapter delves into the crucial role of external human-machine interfaces (eHMIs) in facilitating pedestrian-autonomous vehicle (AV) interaction. It presents a virtual reality experiment that assesses the impact of various eHMI types on pedestrians' understanding, comfort, and safety. The study compares visual eHMIs using text and symbols with auditory eHMIs featuring anthropomorphic voices, revealing that the combination of visual and auditory cues significantly enhances pedestrians' perception and acceptance of AVs. The research highlights the symbol + anthropomorphic voice eHMI as the most preferred by participants, indicating that multimodal eHMIs are key to improving pedestrian-AV interaction. The findings suggest that future research should explore more typical scenarios and aim to standardize eHMI designs for practical applications.
