Abstract

This chapter delves into the intricate behavior of turbulent mixing in ammonia-heptane diffusion lean-combustion within Reactivity Controlled Compression Ignition (RCCI) engines. The study emphasizes the necessity of considering turbulent mixing to achieve better molecular-level mixing, as evidenced by the superior performance of the Eddy Dissipation Concept (EDC) model over the finite rate model. The research highlights how the EDC model retards combustion phasing, enhancing mixing efficiency and shortening combustion duration. Additionally, the chapter explores the impact of spray dynamics on fuel evaporation and mixture distribution, which significantly influences ignition location and the combustion process. The findings reveal that combustion characteristics are highly sensitive to the chosen modeling approach, offering valuable insights for optimizing engine performance with ammonia as a carbon-free energy source.
