Abstract

This chapter delves into the integration of humans with advanced technological systems in automated production lines, emphasizing the importance of human-centric design in Industry 4.0 and Industry 5.0. It introduces a Human-Centred Design methodology inspired by the User Experience Design cycle, which includes phases such as user research, design, virtual prototyping, and ergonomic assessment. The methodology leverages virtual reality tools and wearable devices to collect data on physical and mental human conditions, enabling early assessment of operators' workload. A real-world industrial case study is presented, demonstrating the application of this methodology to optimize a packaging machine for reduced operator workload and improved wellbeing. The chapter highlights the significance of combining virtual manufacturing with human data analysis to enhance system performance and worker satisfaction, making it a valuable resource for professionals seeking to implement human-centric design in complex system designs.
