Africa is clearly a special case for private equity. Aggregating the data for the continent’s 56 nations paints an encouraging picture: the population, at 1.02 billion, is almost as large as India’s or China’s, and the economy has been growing at a rate of around 6 per cent per year for the past decade. But while the urban areas of some African states contain a great deal of wealth — there are parts of Lagos, for instance, where property costs more than in much of London or New York — the continent remains home to more of the world’s poor than any other.
