Development service supplier FEV and supplier SEG Automotive have teamed up to develop the A48V concept car. The 48 V mild hybrid is designed to increase the performance and efficiency of the powertrain.

The mild hybrid concept car is a modified production Mercedes AMG A45. FEV, SEG Automotive and the Institute for Combustion Engines at RWTH Aachen University have equipped the powertrain with a 48 V belt starter generator (boost recuperation machine, BRM) from SEG Automotive. Combined with an electric compressor, this improves the response and efficiency of the four-cylinder spark-ignition engine.

The electric compressor enables torque to peak from just 1,600 rpm rather than 2,250 rpm in the production vehicle. The BRM's boost function increases both the acceleration and the efficiency. A smooth automatic start/stop function is also offered, as well as brake energy recovery and coasting. This function can also use an on-board camera-based sensor system for predictive recuperation. The BRM is expected to save up to 15 percent fuel in real operation.
