Abstract

The article discusses the importance of accurately characterizing soil strata in the South Iceland Seismic Zone, particularly sites with embedded lava rock layers, for seismic design. It introduces a hybrid inversion method combining dispersion and ellipticity curves, which is more cost-effective and non-invasive than traditional methods. The study focuses on four infrastructure sites in South Iceland, using microtremor HVSR and surface wave analysis to identify and characterize these sites. The results demonstrate the feasibility of the hybrid method in identifying and characterizing complex soil structures, providing valuable insights for seismic site response analysis and design in geologically complex areas like Iceland.
