Abstract

The chapter delves into the critical role of ballast in railway track infrastructure, focusing on its hydraulic characteristics and how they are affected by degradation. It discusses the mechanisms of ballast degradation, including particle breakage and mud pumping, and their impact on the drainage capacity and shear strength of ballasted tracks. The study employs a constant head permeability test to determine the hydraulic conductivity of ballast and investigates the variation of this parameter with particle breakage index and different degrees of fouling due to mud pumping. The results highlight the significant decrease in hydraulic conductivity with increasing ballast breakage index and fouling percentage, underscoring the need for frequent maintenance to ensure the optimal performance of rail tracks.
