Abstract

This chapter delves into the fascinating world of hydrocarbon accumulation and reservoir formation, focusing on the concept and measurement of traps and hydrocarbon reservoirs. Traps, analogous to snares, are geological sites where hydrocarbons concentrate, consisting of reservoir rock, cap rock, and barriers. These barriers can be structural, stratigraphic, lithological, or hydrodynamic, with anticline and fault traps being the most common. The text explains how traps are measured by their maximum effective volume, spill point, closure area, and closure height, which determine the size of the hydrocarbon reservoir. The chapter also discusses the formation of hydrocarbon reservoirs, distinguishing between oil, gas, and oil and gas reservoirs, and explores the factors that influence their commercial viability. Additionally, the text highlights how technological advancements and economic conditions can transform non-commercial reservoirs into commercially viable ones. By understanding these geological processes and measurements, professionals can better evaluate and exploit hydrocarbon resources.
