Abstract

The chapter begins by examining the appeal of hydrogen as a clean fuel, emphasizing its potential to produce only water upon combustion. However, it quickly delves into the complexities of hydrogen production, revealing that conventional methods like steam methane reforming result in significant greenhouse gas emissions. The text explores the concept of 'color-coded' hydrogen, differentiating between gray, blue, green, and other types based on their production methods and environmental impact. It highlights the challenges of green hydrogen, including high production costs and energy-intensive processes, and discusses the implications for long-distance hydrogen transport, particularly the energy demands and boil-off gas issues associated with liquefied hydrogen. The chapter then shifts its focus to ammonia, presenting it as a potential solution to hydrogen's transport challenges. It details the Haber-Bosch process for ammonia synthesis and the environmental considerations of ammonia as a fuel, including its toxicity and the issue of ammonia slip. The text concludes by emphasizing the need for a comprehensive analysis of production processes and the critical importance of considering the entire lifecycle of these fuels in the pursuit of sustainable energy solutions.
