Excerpt

Liebherr's development of a hydrogen combustion engine with a Port Fuel Injection (PFI) system marks a significant step towards decarbonizing heavy-duty applications. The engine's robustness, reliability, and responsiveness make it suitable for demanding construction machinery, offering near-zero greenhouse gas emissions and excellent efficiency. The article discusses the successful testing of the PFI system, which has shown promising results in terms of performance and dynamic behavior. Liebherr aims to achieve a level of performance equivalent to diesel engines, paving the way for low-emission powertrains in machine fleets. A pilot project with Strabag at the Austrian Kanzelstein quarry will demonstrate the potential of hydrogen engines in reducing emissions in the construction sector. The use of climate-neutral hydrogen produced with renewable energy sources is highlighted as a key enabler for achieving climate neutrality goals.
