Hydrogen is particularly relevant as a carbon-free energy source in many areas of industry. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Thomas von Unwerth, Managing Director of the Institute of Automotive Research at Chemnitz University of Technology, explains in this interview what role it can also play in the field of mobility.
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Thomas von Unwerth, studied mechanical engineering at Dortmund University and completed his doctorate at the Institute of Fluid Energy Machines. In 2002, he joined Volkswagen Corporate Research as a development engineer for fuel cells, where he became Director of the Volkswagen project Fuel Cell APU Systems. In 2006, he went on to become Director of the Volkswagen project Fuel Cell Vehicles in China for Shanghai Volkswagen (now SAIC Volkswagen). In 2007, he also took on a lectureship at Hannover University. Since 2010, Professor Unwerth has been Head of the Department of Advanced Powertrains at Chemnitz University of Technology. In 2014, he was appointed Managing Director of the Institute of Automotive Research. In addition, he has been Chief Technology Officer of FCP Fuel Cell Powertrain GmbH and Managing Director of HZwo e. V. since 2018.
