Abstract

This study investigates the hygrothermal recovery (HTR) behavior of the cellulose-rich gelatinous (G-) layer in tension wood (TW) using viscoelastic vibration measurements. The research focuses on the relationship between viscoelastic properties and dimensional changes during hygrothermal treatment. The findings suggest that the G-layer plays a crucial role in HTR, with its contraction due to hygrothermal treatment being the primary mechanism underlying changes in vibrational properties and the generation of HTR strain. The study also highlights the importance of understanding HTR to improve the profitability of wood resources and provides a promising method for assessing changes in wood polymers during HTR. The research offers valuable insights into the structure-property relationship in TW and the potential applications of measuring vibrational properties to distinguish green TW and normal wood.
