Abstract

This study delves into a novel icing protection system for aircraft using non-thermal Surface Dielectric Barrier Discharge (SDBD) plasma actuators. The research focuses on the electrothermal conversion during the de-icing process, aiming to quantify the heat transferred to the ice. The experimental setup includes a cold chamber, SDBD plasma actuator, and Planar Laser-Induced Fluorescence (PLIF) for temperature measurement. The study investigates the influence of electrical parameters and dielectric materials on droplet heating and melting dynamics. Results show that sapphire, with its higher permittivity and thermal conductivity, is more effective for de-icing compared to PTFE. The research concludes that SDBD actuators have significant potential for ice mitigation, with future work suggested to explore alternative electrode geometries and dielectric materials for improved performance.
