Abstract

The chapter delves into the role of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) as a driver of employee engagement in Russian firms, focusing on the phenomena of alienation and opportunism. It begins by discussing the transformative effects of the fourth technological revolution on the role of employees in the production process. The authors then explore the dual psychological effects of ICT use, which can either increase or decrease employee motivation and interest. The study employs established concepts such as social alienation and behavioral opportunism to assess the impact of ICT on employee engagement. The methodology involves normalizing survey results to measure alienation, opportunism, and ICT use levels. The empirical findings reveal that frequent ICT use in work and everyday life significantly reduces both alienation and opportunism among employees. The chapter concludes by highlighting the positive correlation between ICT use and employee engagement, and proposes future research directions to further understand the nuances of this relationship.
