Abstract

The chapter explores the identification of modal parameters in coupled rotor-foundation systems using Automatic Operational Modal Analysis (AOMA). It introduces the challenges and advantages of AOMA over traditional Experimental Modal Analysis (EMA), particularly in the context of rotating machinery. The research focuses on the application of an AOMA algorithm developed by Dreher et al. (2023) to a complex system influenced by gas seal pressure, validating its robustness and accuracy. The methodology involves the use of the Stochastic Subspace Identification (SSI) algorithm and hierarchical clustering techniques to extract and analyze modal parameters. The results are compared with EMA and OMA analyses from Paulsen et al. (2023), showing high accuracy and computational efficiency. The chapter concludes by highlighting the algorithm’s ability to identify most physical modes of interest, even in complex systems, and its potential for further development and application in the field of structural health monitoring.
