Abstract

This chapter delves into the importance of active design features in buildings, particularly in hot-humid climates like Brunei. It highlights the necessity of active design solutions to complement passive design strategies, which alone are insufficient for occupant comfort. The study identifies eight active design features through a structured literature review and evaluates their suitability via a questionnaire survey targeting construction professionals. The findings reveal that electric lighting systems, HVAC systems, and evaporative cooling are the most commonly used active features, while solar technology and heat pumps are less frequently adopted. The chapter also discusses the benefits and challenges of implementing these active strategies, offering insights for architects, engineers, and policymakers aiming to promote sustainable building practices. The study concludes with recommendations for the adoption of suitable active design features to enhance building performance and occupant comfort in hot-humid regions.
