Abstract

The chapter 'Identity Politics, Political Mobilization, and Social In/Exclusions' examines the evolution and impact of identity politics in contemporary European politics. It discusses the historical roots of identity politics, tracing back to the women’s suffrage movement and the emergence of post-materialist values. The role of technology and civil society in facilitating political mobilization is highlighted, along with the EU’s influence on these dynamics. The chapter also explores the structural factors contributing to identity politics, such as neoliberal economic policies and the EU’s institutional framework. It concludes by discussing the ambiguous role of identity politics in promoting social inclusion and cohesion in Europe.
