Impact and Challenges of Design and Sustainability in the Industry 4.0 Era: Co-Designing the Next Generation of Urban Beekeeping

Abstract

The chapter delves into the intersection of Industry 4.0 and sustainability, specifically focusing on urban beekeeping. It discusses the challenges faced by honeybees and the potential of IoT technologies to monitor and manage beehives effectively. The paper also introduces the concept of co-design, involving both expert beekeepers and ordinary citizens in the design and management of urban beehives. Through user research and expert interviews, the authors explore the acceptance and needs of urban beekeeping, providing a conceptual model for a smart beehive system. The discussion highlights how these innovations can contribute to three United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: Good Health and Well-Being, Sustainable Cities and Communities, and Life on Land. The conclusions emphasize the potential of these approaches to address real-world problems and encourage further research and real-world testing.
