Abstract

This chapter investigates the influence of El Niño and La Niña on the seasonal rainfall patterns of Coastal Karnataka, India. It examines how these climate extremes affect the region's crucial agricultural and fishery sectors, which are heavily dependent on monsoon rainfall. The study utilizes rainfall data from 1901 to 2019, correlating it with ENSO phases to understand the impacts on rainfall intensity and distribution. The chapter also discusses the implications of ENSO on peak and deficit rainfall, providing valuable insights into the preparation for and mitigation of floods and droughts. By understanding these climate patterns, the chapter offers crucial information for policymakers and stakeholders to enhance resilience and sustainability in the region.
