Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic brought about unprecedented changes in travel behavior and traffic dynamics, particularly in urban areas. This chapter delves into the impact of the pandemic on vehicular speeds in the National Capital Territory of Delhi, focusing on the distinct phases of lockdowns and unlock periods. The analysis reveals significant variations in average speeds during different phases, with the highest speeds observed during the strict lockdown periods due to reduced traffic volumes and minimized congestion. As restrictions eased, speeds decreased with the resurgence of economic activities and increased vehicle movement. The chapter also explores the shift towards personal modes of transport and the decline in public transport usage, influenced by health concerns and government policies. Furthermore, it discusses the nuanced impact on road fatalities, highlighting the relationship between reduced traffic volume, increased vehicular speeds, and changes in driving behavior. The study area encompasses the diverse districts of Delhi, with data collected using Google API and analyzed through descriptive and statistical tools. The findings underscore the importance of adaptive traffic management strategies and the implementation of traffic calming measures to address the evolving challenges in urban mobility post-pandemic. This chapter offers a comprehensive examination of how the pandemic has reshaped traffic patterns and provides valuable insights for future urban planning and transportation policies.
