Abstract

The study conducted over two cropping seasons at the Cereal Crops Research Institute in Pakistan investigated the impact of cropping systems and planting techniques on soil properties and wheat productivity under rainfed conditions. The research compared conventional tillage, zero tillage, and wide bed planting methods within mung-wheat and fallow-wheat cropping systems. Results indicated that zero tillage significantly improved soil organic matter, soil organic carbon, soil total nitrogen, and microbial biomass carbon. Additionally, zero tillage led to higher numbers of productive wheat tillers, thousand grain weight, and grain yield compared to conventional tillage. The economic analysis revealed that zero tillage in the mung-wheat system provided the highest net return and benefit-cost ratio. The study underscores the potential of conservation agriculture practices, particularly zero tillage, in enhancing soil fertility and crop productivity under rainfed conditions.
