Abstract

The article delves into the critical role of exchange rates in Ethiopia's trade balance, focusing on the period from 1998 to 2020. It explores the theoretical frameworks of elasticity, absorption, and monetary approaches to understand the relationship between currency devaluation and trade balance. The study employs an autoregressive distributed lag model to analyze time series data, revealing significant long-term and short-term impacts. The findings indicate that currency devaluation improves Ethiopia's trade balance in the long run, while fiscal and monetary policies play crucial roles in short-term dynamics. The article also highlights the importance of trade openness and economic growth in achieving a sustainable trade balance. This comprehensive analysis offers valuable insights for policymakers and researchers aiming to enhance Ethiopia's trade competitiveness and economic stability.
