Abstract

This chapter explores the impact of freeze-thaw cycling on the longevity of Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity (UPV) sensors embedded in concrete, focusing on potential irreversible effects. The study involves extensive testing on a concrete cube subjected to 102 freeze-thaw cycles, with embedded UPV and temperature sensors. Key topics include the experimental setup, temperature monitoring, UPV waveform analysis, and the effects of freeze-thaw cycling on sensor performance. Results indicate that while UPV transducers maintained functionality, variations in waveform amplitude and duration were observed, suggesting potential irreversible effects on concrete-transducer interaction. The analysis highlights the reliability of UPV transducers for concrete monitoring under extreme conditions and underscores the need for further research to understand long-term performance and develop mitigation strategies.
