Abstract

The article investigates the impact of lateral confinement on the seismic bearing capacity of shallow foundations in saturated sand, focusing on the use of structural skirting to enhance foundation performance. It begins by reviewing historical and contemporary research on skirted foundations, emphasizing their advantages over traditional deep foundations in terms of construction simplicity and installation speed. The study employs finite element analysis using PLAXIS 3D to model the behavior of confined and unconfined foundations under static and dynamic loading conditions. Key findings include a significant increase in ultimate seismic bearing capacity, with enhancements up to 760% in certain cases. The research also highlights the role of confinement depth, peak ground acceleration (PGA), and initial static load in influencing bearing capacity and settlement reduction. The article provides detailed insights into the failure mechanisms and stress-settlement behaviors of confined foundations, demonstrating the effectiveness of lateral confinement in mitigating the effects of soil liquefaction during seismic events. Additionally, it discusses the implications for both conventional and offshore construction applications, offering a robust framework for improving the design and performance of shallow foundations in seismic-prone areas.
