Abstract

This study delves into the intricate relationship between pore water distribution and the mechanical behavior of Longyou argillaceous siltstone, a critical factor in the preservation of the Longyou Grottoes. Through a combination of in-situ uniaxial compression tests and high-energy CT real-time scanning, the research captures the evolution of water distribution and fracture patterns under varying moisture conditions. The study employs the soft-bond model in PFC2D to simulate the mechanical response and fracture evolution, providing a detailed analysis of how non-uniform moisture distributions influence crack initiation and propagation. The findings reveal that water content significantly affects the strength and deformation characteristics of the siltstone, with a notable transition in failure modes from brittle to ductile behavior as moisture levels increase. The research also highlights the importance of external drainage systems and zoned reinforcement measures in maintaining the structural integrity of moisture-sensitive siltstone. By integrating experimental data with numerical simulations, this study offers practical guidance for the preservation of the Longyou Grottoes and similar underground structures, emphasizing the critical role of moisture control in geotechnical engineering.
