Abstract

This study delves into the critical factors affecting the stability of room-and-pillar mines, particularly the impact of igneous intrusions. By examining the stress distribution and failure mechanisms, the research underscores the significance of considering geological heterogeneities in mine design. The study employs a combination of continuous and discontinuous numerical approaches to evaluate how intrusions influence stress transfer and pillar stability. Key findings include the identification of correction factors that can be used to reassess safety factors originally calculated under the assumption of a homogeneous rock mass. The research also highlights the importance of contact stiffness and the elastic properties of intrusions and host rocks in determining the stability of pillars. Additionally, the study provides insights into the relative influence of different parameters on the normalized mean stress, offering practical guidelines for mine design and safety assessment. The conclusions emphasize the need for a comprehensive understanding of the interaction between intrusion geometry, contact stiffness, and pillar dimensions to predict stress concentrations and fracture behavior in heterogeneous rock masses.
