Abstract

The article delves into the intricate dynamics of two-degree-of-freedom vortex-induced vibration (2DOF-VIV) of a heated/cooled cylinder under the influence of temperature-induced buoyancy. It examines how thermal buoyancy affects the vibrational behavior of the cylinder, uncovering mechanisms that can either amplify or suppress vibrations. The study employs a rigorous numerical solver, validated against established literature, to model the fluid–thermal–structure interactions. Key findings include the impact of the Richardson number on vibration amplitudes and heat transfer efficiency, revealing potential open-loop control strategies for mitigating structural damage. The research has significant implications for optimizing the design and operation of engineering systems in various domains, such as offshore construction, heat exchangers, and underwater pipelines.
