Abstract

This chapter delves into the significant role of biomass ash and biochar in modern agriculture, focusing on their impact on crop yield and quality. The text begins by discussing the global production of biomass ash and its potential as a nutrient input, despite the presence of trace heavy metals. It then explores the benefits of biochar, including its ability to improve soil fertility and sequester carbon. The chapter is structured around the effects of these materials on different plant groups: cereals, tuberous and root crops, vegetables, and orchards. For cereals, biomass ash is shown to be an effective substitute for phosphorus and potassium fertilizers, while biochar enhances soil properties and improves nutrient utilization efficiency. In tuberous and root crops, both ash and biochar contribute to increased yields and improved quality, with biochar also enhancing water retention and nutrient availability. Vegetables, particularly those with short growing seasons and shallow root systems, benefit from the deacidifying properties of biomass ash and the improved soil structure and water retention provided by biochar. In orcharding, biochar is found to revitalize old orchards and improve fruit yield and quality. The chapter also compares biomass ash and biochar with conventional mineral and organic fertilizers, highlighting their unique advantages and potential challenges. It concludes by emphasizing the importance of integrated fertilization strategies that combine the benefits of mineral, organic, and biochar fertilizers to achieve sustainable and high-yield agriculture.
