Abstract

This chapter explores the critical aspects of impeller design and slurry pump selection for cutter suction dredger projects, with a specific focus on the PB21A fabrication project. It begins by examining the sedimentation process and the necessity of dredging to maintain water depth in port areas. The chapter provides a detailed analysis of fluid characteristics, including specific gravity and viscosity of slurry, and conducts a thorough velocity analysis to ensure efficient slurry transfer. A key highlight is the calculation of terminal velocity of particles and the determination of optimal pipe diameter and velocity to prevent blockages. The chapter also delves into pump calculations, including head loss, pressure head, elevation head, and velocity head, with a focus on performance corrections for slurry conditions. A unique feature is the comparison of manual and numerical analysis methods using Pipe Flow Expert software, demonstrating the accuracy and reliability of the calculations.
