Abstract

This chapter delves into the crucial role of eco-label logos in facilitating sustainable communication amidst a plethora of product choices. It highlights the challenges in effectively communicating sustainable choices through eco-labels, particularly the lack of consumer understanding of their meanings and criteria. The chapter presents an empirical study that explores the impact of visual and conceptual complexity, color schemes, and textual information on consumers' sustainability perceptions and eco-label adoption. The findings reveal that visual complexity positively influences perceived sustainability and label adoption, while conceptual complexity has a negative effect when label recognition is low. Background colors like green and blue significantly enhance perceived sustainability and credibility. Textual information is also found to be crucial in shaping perceptions of sustainability and trust. The study underscores the importance of balancing visual appeal and conceptual clarity in eco-label design, offering practical insights for marketers, designers, and policymakers.
