Abstract

This chapter explores the use of natural fibres to enhance the mechanical properties of concrete, addressing the challenges posed by conventional concrete such as brittleness and low tensile strength. It delves into the types of natural fibres available, their chemical and physical properties, and how they can be effectively incorporated into concrete mixes. The chapter also discusses the advantages of using natural fibres, including improved durability, reduced microcracking, and enhanced sustainability. Additionally, it highlights the challenges and potential solutions for preserving the integrity of natural fibres in concrete, such as treating fibres to prevent degradation. The chapter concludes by emphasizing the potential of natural fibre-reinforced concrete (NFRC) as a sustainable and cost-effective alternative in the construction industry.
