Abstract

The chapter delves into the challenges posed by heavy traffic and environmental conditions on traditional road construction, emphasizing the need for advanced technologies to enhance pavement performance. It focuses on the stabilization of lithomargic subgrade soils, which are prevalent along the west coast of southern India and known for their high water sensitivity and strength loss upon saturation. The study introduces a sustainable approach using geopolymerized agro-industrial wastes, specifically Ground-granulated blast furnace Slag (GGBS) and Sugarcane Bagasse Ash (SCBA), to modify these soils. Through extensive experimentation, the research demonstrates significant improvements in the geotechnical properties of lithomargic soils, including increased maximum dry density, unconfined compressive strength, and California Bearing Ratio. The chapter also explores the potential for cost-effective and sustainable pavement designs, highlighting the environmental benefits of utilizing industrial wastes. The findings underscore the effectiveness of geopolymer-based solutions in enhancing subgrade performance, offering a promising avenue for future research and practical applications in pavement construction.
