The use of direct injection in gasoline engines can result in increased emissions of soot particles. The goal pursued by today's engine developers is to minimize particle emissions to such an extent that the limit values can be achieved under real driving conditions. In order to reach such a target, it is important to know how soot formation in the combustion chamber influences the quantity of soot in the exhaust gas. In collaboration with Kistler, a minimally invasive optical measurement technique was used at the Fraunhofer Institute for Chemical Technology (ICT) in Karlsruhe, to show which combustion conditions and cycles influence the amount of soot in the exhaust gas. …
