Abstract

This article presents a detailed investigation into the in-situ monitoring and control of laser-directed energy deposition with wire (L-DED/W) for duplex stainless steel (DSS) 2209 components. The study focuses on the parameter-signature-quality (PSQ) framework, which establishes correlations between process parameters, melt pool signatures, and final component qualities such as microstructure and hardness. The research involves extensive experimental work, including the fabrication of a DSS 2209 ring with systematically varied process parameters and the capture of real-time melt pool signatures. Advanced image processing techniques are employed to extract melt pool features, and microstructural analysis is conducted to quantify austenite phase content, average grain size, and average grain circularity. The study also incorporates finite element analysis to support and explain experimental observations. Key findings include the significant influence of process signatures on final qualities, the decoupling of geometry control from mechanical properties, and the identification of critical process parameters for optimizing hardness and microstructure. The article concludes by highlighting the potential for real-time monitoring and closed-loop control in the L-DED/W process, providing a foundation for future advancements in additive manufacturing.
